The National Institutes of Health, Office of Rare Diseases Research and The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation offer a 2-day meeting in March 2012 in Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting is to survey obstacles and needs of the Primary Mitochondrial Diseases Research and Development Community that could enhance translation of basic science discoveries to the development of diagnostics and therapeutics.
After the conclusion of the meeting the organizers and co-chairs worked to develop an executive summary and white paper based on the presentations and discussions that took place during the 2-day meeting. The goal of this document was to not only summarize the proceedings but to establish some possible paths forward to take advantage of opportunities and to help the primary mitochondrial diseases community overcome the barriers identified during the meeting. The document can be accessed here.
